Galileo discovered the moons of Jupiter in 1610. Thinking they were stars, he named them “The Medician Stars” after his patron. His later realization that they were moons orbiting Jupiter was a blow against the theory of Earth being the center of the universe. The moons were eventually named after lovers of the Roman equivalent of Jupiter, Zeus.
Io’s pocked and constantly changing landscape is the most volcanic surface in our solar system. In mythology, she was a priestess of the goddess Hera that captivated Zeus.
Ganymede is larger than the planet Mercury with a barren and icy landscape. Ganymede was abducted as a youth by Zeus, who took the form of an eagle to capture the boy.
Europa’s underground oceans are considered to be one of the most likely homes for extraterrestrial life in our solar system. The building blocks of life percolate in the swirling tides of oceans that may never see light or warmth. Zeus seduced Europa in the form of a great white bull.
Callisto pensively waits for humans to arrive. Far from Jupiter’s radiation, it is the most likely location for a human outpost. Callisto was a shapeshifting nymph that beguiled Zeus.
These pieces were recorded in a single take with no overdubs using the same small Eurorack system that was used for the album Moonbase Alpha:
